Meditation is an ancient practice with a wide range of physical, psychological, physiological & spiritual benefits.

WHY DO LUNG PATIENTS NEED RELAXATION?

Being diagnosed with a chronic lung disease can be frightening and worrisome. The possibility of exacerbations, poor prognosis takes a heavy toll on the mental health of the lung patient. The mind is always occupied worrying about the treatment, their efficacy, fear, doubts etc. which causes severe stress & anxiety, sometimes even depression. A bad mental state of mind often hinders healing. Thus, relaxation is extremely necessary.

WHAT IS THE RATIONALE BEHIND MEDITATION?

The ancient Vedas describe elements of the human body as follows:

  • Physical body

  • Inner faculty: The working consciousness, which is constantly changing. This consists of:

  • Mind: Processes the sensations

  • Intellect: Analyzes, discriminates, decides, and judges

  • Ego: Doer and experiencer

  • Chitta: The storehouse of all memories and impressions of life

  • Deep inner Self: The nonchanging pure consciousness, which has the quality of unity and witnesses the activity of the inner faculty.

HOW SHOULD ONE BEGIN MEDITATION?

  • Find a quiet place away from any outside disturbances.

  • Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Sitting cross legged is usually preferred, but upright sitting is important.

  • As you breathe in and out, direct your attention to your breathing.

  • Your mind may wander, but this is normal. Whenever this happens, redirect your focus to your breathing.

  • Continue for 5 minutes. Note how you’re feeling calmer and more at peace afterwards.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEDITATION?

Meditation usually involves focusing the minds attention in a particular thing, which may be any stimulus.

  • Mantra Meditation - It involves chanting, allowing the mind to focus on the words

  • Mindfulness Meditation - The mind is focused on any simple noise such as chirping of birds with attention to it

  • Focused Meditation - Involves focusing on any one source i.e. music, sound, etc.

  • Spiritual Meditation - The goal is to progress on a spiritual level by connecting with oneself

The Goal of meditation is not to control your thoughts. The goal is to stop Your thoughts from controlling you!
